Harriet is a sociologist who has been employed in academia since 2007, teaching sociology and undertaking research work. Harriet has also previously worked in professional roles, including project support and research administration.  

Prior to academia Harriet worked for a decade in social research, social policy and social planning roles for NGOs and government in the UK and Australia. Harriet utilises a micro-theory approach to understanding social interaction, with a focus on personal relationships, emotion, ritual, and reflexivity in the context of social change. 

Dr Harriet Westcott's research interests are broad, and include friendships/personal relationships, emotions, surveillance studies, and social media. She is currently contributing to research that is focused on adolescent health and digital media.
